KILIMANJARO AND SUMMER 2012

The duo plans to meet up in Africa to tackle another major world peak, Kilimanjaro. The 19,341 foot Giant lies atop the roof of Africa. The climb is considered a less challenging peak than most of the other major peaks HIll N Batt have ascended, but the training has already begun and both climbers will be at their physical apex come Africa. After the Summit, we plan to hit up a Safari, and then book it back to Hill’s native Manly beach where we will initiate the Hill N Batt Annual summer of Surf. Which has taken place in Los Angeles(2008), Northern Baja Mexico(2009), and Huntington Beach/San Diego (2010). The 2012 trip will start in Manly Beach Australia and follow the swell for a couple weeks before we will head our separate ways again. Only one thing can be guaranteed…. With HILL N BATT it is always Radical, and if its not, talk about it to some else.

This climb will be dedicated to raising awareness for for the dwindling population of Bengal Tigers( less than 2,500 left in wild) and Bluefin Tuna. These species are dropping off the earth due to human greed. It is likely they will be gone in the next few decades. Please support the World WildLife Federation in their efforts to save these Great Predators before it is too late. Who wants to live in a world where humans cannot coexist with the majestic predators of the land and sea.

Hillnbatt.com- 2011 Cali summer / Australia summer

First off would like to apologize to my climbing partner and best friend, Brendan batt for not getting the New hillnbatt template up on the front page of the website but my website manager as been doing a lot of other things and since she volunteers we get pushed aside but don’t sweat it’s gonna be done soon. Batt and I had a great time this summer — he came out to Huntington beach for 19 days we hit Cardiff reef – trestles – hb pier all during significant 5-8th swell. His girlfriend Kristina even came out with George Brooks, mogli, Duncan, Ash and HillnBatt. We had a great San onofre session and it was just great to surf with a group of tight friends. (I’ll get some pics up soon.
The summer in Huntington was my last and how great it was we had great swell, great friends, and great times. Tempis fugit (time flys in latin). I rested and didn’t run at all during the summer healing that Achilles tendinitis and really focused on weight training, mental toughness, and surfing among all. This summer with Duncan, George, mogli, sometimes Ben tredwell – and when I had the graces ash would join us. It was the tightest surf crew I’ve ever been apart of and it is dearly missed especially during this first week in Australia.
The memories of George banging on my window getting me up for a surf with a 2×4 at 6 am while still drunk from the night before — what a blast. I can honestly say I never let any inappropriate behavior the night before conflict with my surfing. It was great.
To finish off the summer I went to el Salvador with my (then girlfriend) now fiancee Ashleigh Speer. Screaming right point breaks and I actually got engaged, hid the ring in the board bag and asked her to grab the wax out of the board bag. She looked
at me like I was crazy then I replied “babe that’s where I keep the wax now-a-days” I Totally caught her off guard; ohh and she said Yes. It was great (except for the day I spent in bed due to some bad oysters) I still surfed that morning while shitting and vomiting in the el salvadorian pacific and all over my self… Uggggghh!!! The one thing about getting engaged is that it gave me all the leeway a surfer could ask for. Spent about 25 hrs in the water in 4 1/2 days which isn’t so bad – caught a few tubes and will try to get the pics up also this week.
Anyway now I’m in Australia living in a hotel near a national park and been running everyday – long trail runs and it looks like my injury has finally healed. I still have to wear my brace and take ibuprofen but the rest is cake. I went for a 5-6 hr run / hike uphill in the forest here – big lizards and the trail brings you around the river. Reminds me of the old 10 mile runs in Tuscaloosa by the black warrior river during my college days. Really found myself on some of those long runs – even sway across a few times (it’s a bad idea kids)
Good to get away from the desert and actually smell the forest and get some rain. But anyway I surfed manly beach tues / wed / thurs but nothing even shoulder high. Its gonna pick up and tomorrow ash and i a gonna check out a point break uo the road called curl curl and dee why — they both are first class breaks but theres no significant swell so we’ll most probably just soak up some sun and pints. Looks like I got a job doing stand-up paddle lessons at manly surf camp but not till high season in december. Should be doing some private surf lessons also in the next month. I even met a buddy another George who owns a local surf shop and he’s letting me keep my board there. The people are really nice here – never met more unselfish people it’s almost like a combo of Huntington beach and new Orleans cause everyone is nailing waves and pints of beer left and right. Met a former top gun pilot named Flash who brews his own beer and we had a great time gambling on the oak/San Diego game. Ashleigh is working really hard and really kicking ass in everyday while I’m training and surfing – man did I get lucky!!! I’m gonna be having a bar tending gig starting next week (hopefully) but except for that I believe we should have a

house in the next few weeks so I’m gonna have a lot to do fixing it up etc… Some swell coming too!! I’ll keep everyone up to date a really try and get some pics put up — again batt
sorry about the front page from my old website but it’s difficult to get anything done today — I’m heading next weekend with ash to conquer Mt.Kosciusko the 4/7 summits highest mountain in australia in the snowy peaks mtn range and were gonna bring a bottle of champagne to the top!! They also have some gnarly rock climbing there as well. I went to kent street by subway at visited a place called mountain equipment and they set up trips to the blue mountains which have serious headwalls and huge climbs going up to 1,0000 mtrs so im gonna head to the rock climbing gym this week and see if i can team up with someone for a trip up there next week. if you need me just email me at hille003@gmail.com – domination continues…

Surf / Injury

5/5 – Surf the last few weeks had been small but really good conditions. this last weekend we had some heavy offshore winds that couldnt be ignored. Most of my best rides were from the re-form on the inside. The outside was better for a longboard or SUP. It was fun, fun surf. It looks very weak this week and into the weekend but we’ll see.
Injury: Achilles Tendonitis
Cause: Over-use
Treatment: Ice, rest, compression sock
What to do…? well its been bothering me ever since the 50 miler but I decided to not let it hinder my training for the Long Beach Marathon in October. Yet I went home for Easter and got into a heated 1 on 1 barefoot basketball game with my little brother Will and really messed it up. So I finally decided to accept my injury for what it is and really try and rest it…(started last week) — My 4 point plan was simple:
1) Surf more
2)Go back to High School style weight lifting (I used to keep composition notebooks back then so I dug those up)
3)hit golf balls when surfs blown out
4)rest and Ice EVERYDAY
This lasted all of 4 days till I ran Friday because it felt so good and now Im back to the pain and Im serious about my 8 week plan now — We’ll see how it goes —

50 mile run

This year for my 26th Birthday I took off to Catalina Island for the Avalon 50 which is one of the toughest 50 mile races in the country. A 50 mile race is way different than I though it would be. first off it makes a marathon look like a cheerleading contest. during a marathon they have an aid station usually every 1-2 miles with people everywhere cheering you on. In a 50 mile race (especially this one located in the middle of nowhere) there is noone you even see excpept for runners and a aid station every 7-10 miles. there were times I was completly alone for a hour or so during the race. The race brings you all the way to the other side of Avalon and the trail continuasly raises you up to a thousand feet or so and then sringss you down to sea level. Its constantly going up-hill and down-hill and after aboout 30 miles or so the downhill is just as brutal as the up-hill. The race doesnt take the same mental toll as a marathon as your running slower and your mind has time to actually get used to the fatigue. The main thing your fighting is the PAIN. The PAIN in your feet after 25 or so miles on a rock trail was definetly a birthday present that I wasnt exactly looking for. At the end I was hungry, very hungry and thank God I had the Beautiful Asheligh Speer at the finish line and she got me the BEST bacon-cheeseburger that Ive ever had. After that I ate again, after that I slept. I’ve had better birthdays but in the words of Drew Rodrigue it was what it was. Ill have a surf report on 3/14 cause the waves are gonna be great this weekend. Ill also get some pictures up from the run (running pictures kinda suck , so ill keep it to a minimum)
